Chris J. Melcher is Vice President for Legal Affairs/General Counsel at Augusta University (AU), overseeing the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) and all legal services to the University and its afiliates. The General Counsel reports to the President and is a member of the President’s Executive Cabinet. AU is the State of Georgia's public health sciences research university, and includes the Medical College, Dental College, Nursing College, Business College, Graduate Research Institute, Academic Health System (600 bed hospital and 80 clinincs), the Georgia Cyber Center ($100M State of Art Cyber Research and Training Facility), and 4 undergraduate colleges. OLA support to the AU mision includes business transactions, contracts, university governance, employment, research and intellectual property, and data privacy and cyber security.
Prior to AU, Chris served from 2011-14 as the City Attorney/Chief Legal Officer for the City of Colorado Springs (pop. 750,000), managing 30 attorneys and serving as legal advisor to the Mayor, City Council, and all City agencies, as well as General Counsel for the Municipal Hospital System (600 beds), the Municipal Utility ($2 Billion enterprise), and the Municipal Airport. Previously Chris served as General Counsel for The Colorado College, a private liberal arts college with 2000 students, 200 faculty, and a $600 Million endowment. He has held General Counsel positions with both public and private corporations, and arly in his career served as a federal prosecutor in Washington DC with DOJ. Chris is frequent public speaker and recognized national expert on higher education, academic healthcare, and data privacy and cybersecurity in the academic and healthcare space. Chris is a member of multiple state bars and the US Supreme Court bar, serves on several boards including the NACUA Board of Directors, and received his BA from Carleton College and JD from Yale Law School.
