Colleges and universities host thousands of minors on campus each year. Beyond the high human cost and significant reputational harm, failing to protect minors from a sexual predator can lead to eight-figure losses or higher. After presenting the findings of a recent study of educator sexual misconduct, the speakers will discuss the need for and process of creating and supporting a program for campus protection of minors. Using case studies and small group questions to facilitate discussion, they will share their experiences at Vanderbilt University—which recently moved its protection of minors program to the division of finance—and the University of Oregon, which expanded its program to encompass the entire university.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the costs of failing to monitor and protect minors on campus
  • Define the steps necessary to create and oversee an office for protection of minors
  • Use recent studies of educator sexual misconduct claims to gain support for creating a protection of minors program
