Description

Campuses must anticipate future financial operational challenges due to climate change, which is not simply an environmental issue. Climate change trends point to a future with risks that will directly impact the bottom line. For example, rising costs of climate change may affect bond ratings, insurance premiums, utility costs, and taxes, among other areas. The trends all point to an increasing need for business offices to become climate literate. Building this literacy requires deeper adoption of sustainable management principles as well as elevating conversations beyond recycling bins and energy efficiency to tackle topics such as climate risk and resiliency, environmentally and socially responsible management practices, and global goals for sustainable development.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and apply sustainable management principles that navigate risks to university operations
  • Connect the sustainability-focused work of the business office to broader university and global sustainability goals
  • Explain the financial risks associated with climate change, and examine current and future sustainability-related trigger points or trends impacting your campus
