Panelists will share a fact-based, participative approach that integrates external, operating, and financial data to help colleges and universities choose the right programs to start, stop, sustain, or grow. This approach facilitates the development of a long-range program plan that includes forecasted enrollment, faculty, space requirements, and contribution margins by program. The speakers will address how to assess markets for academic programs—including student demand, employment, competition, degree level, and modality (online vs. on-ground); explain how to combine student, course, and instructor data to estimate program margins; and clarify how to integrate market data into a long-range planning model that creates a baseline estimate of future enrollment, faculty requirements, facilities, and contribution margins. In addition, the panelists will outline a process for bringing together faculty and administrators to make tough, fact-based program decisions.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify current programs that could drive profitable growth and flag programs that lose money
  • Estimate the costs and benefits of launching new programs
  • Assess long-term implications of program decisions
