The key feature of blockchain technology—which is in the pre-adoption stage—is that it is decentralized; a central authority of trust is no longer necessary to confirm and process financial transactions. This interactive presentation will offer a definition, historical background, advantages and disadvantages, a look at industry leaders in blockchain technology, comparisons between blockchain and the current financial system of central authorities of trust, current implementations in the private sector, and applications of blockchain for use in higher education. In addition, the audience will be introduced to cryptocurrency through a live demonstration of installing a mobile wallet.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the basic concept of blockchain technology
  • Know several potential use-cases for blockchain in higher education as well as the companies providing blockchain services
  • Evaluate processes to determine if they can become valid blockchain applications
