Welcome to the NACUBO 2008 Annual Meeting

Chicago embodies the history of architecture.  The skyscraper was born here, and each new approach to materials, design, function, and use of space is captured in its skyline.  The angles, points of view, and experiments tried here have influenced the practice of architecture for almost two centuries.  At the NACUBO 2008 Annual Meeting in Chicago, we want to use the inspiration of this cutting edge city to explore new initiatives, new points of view, and new approaches to old problems.

Changing perspective often means looking at the world or a set of assumptions in a different way.  A simple adjustment in perspective can open up a whole new world of possible approaches to begin a new project or to solve an old problem. When you consider only one point of view or limit yourself to one course of action, you rule out a vast number of potential tactics and methods.

Has your institution tried something new?  Have you found a new approach to an old problem?  Is there a challenge facing higher education institutions – energy consumption, succession planning, accountability – that you have found a new way to tackle?  Share it with your colleagues.

When you’re working on a problem, remember:

• Adding angles can change the shape of the problem, providing more options for how to respond.
• Changing views can give more depth of insight, and depth of insight can provide more substance to the solution.
