Program Goal

The New Business Officers (NBO) Program is designed to provide resources, information and guidance to those new to the chief business officer role within a higher education setting. Throughout an intensive two-day workshop, participants will examine the complexities of the role and learn from experienced chief business officers, presidents, provosts, NACUBO experts and other pivotal higher education representatives. Key issues for the success of every new business officer will be covered. Attendees will have many opportunities to network with colleagues and discuss the challenges facing business officers today.

Program Highlights

The program will cover how to develop board relationships, mitigate risk, be a leader of change, and communicate effectively with institutional constituents. Lessons learned from current and veteran chief business officers will be shared. NACUBO board members will share guidance and advice, and participants will have opportunities to discuss specific nuances related to institution type, geographic region and industry background. Attendees will be encouraged to evaluate their current practices, exchange ideas and network with colleagues.

Attendance Criteria

Attendance is limited to CBOs who report directly to the president and have been in their current positions for fewer than three years.

Optional Session

An optional session is designed for chief business officers who are new to the field of higher education. This session will introduce the higher education culture, along with topics and concepts found in higher education that are not common in the corporate or non-profit world.

Earn CPE Credits

Earn an estimated 15 CPE credits in communications, personal development, and specialized knowledge when you participate in the NBO Program. Advance preparation is required. Sessions are targeted at advanced course level.
