Many campuses have older buildings with strong historical value but also deteriorated conditions, requiring updates and upgrades to HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems. Georgia College & State University follows a program of adaptive reuse and collaborative planning that preserves the high quality historic aspects of the building while incorporating newer technologies. The panelists will distill the adaptive reuse planning process, from design phase to building use, and highlight six major building renovations from the view of various campus stakeholders. The renovations provided multiple successes, including improved occupant comfort, better energy efficiencies, advancement of sustainability goals, reduced operational costs, and award recognition.

Learning Objectives

  • Gain insight into the challenges and advantages of adaptive reuse.
  • Engage key stakeholders on campus when planning historic renovations.
  • Recognize the benefits of incorporating sustainability features into renovation projects.
