Faced with an aging infrastructure, extensive deferred maintenance, and funding limitations, McDaniel College recognized an opportunity to make strategic investments that would have the biggest impact on comfort, operational efficiency, and energy efficiency. By targeting the replacement of outdated and non-operational systems first while also focusing on facilities with recognized comfort problems, the college was able to eliminate critical deferred maintenance problems and provide a recognizable benefit to the campus community. McDaniel took an operational approach to prioritizing capital investment on its energy delivery, updating its infrastructure systems to use less energy and reduce environmental impact.

Learning Objectives

  • Investigate strategies for updating building automation and consolidating systems to improve facilities operations.
  • Evaluate follow-through strategies to help get the most out of an energy infrastructure project.
  • Prepare for the unexpected when working with buildings that have significant deferred maintenance.
