In recent years, the health and safety of student athletes have become topics of public conversation. To better understand how higher education takes care of athletes’ medical needs, the NCAA commissioned a survey; this session presents the consolidated responses, by division and subdivision, from Divisions I and II. The speaker will discuss possible gaps and appropriate next steps, explain the NCAA catastrophic injury insurance program, and review current NCAA initiatives that focus on the safety and well-being of student athletes. Topics will include organizational structures that allow autonomous decisions on injuries and playing status, concussions, mental health, and areas of focus for various sports.

Learning Objectives

  • Review what is being done to safeguard the health and safety of student athletes.
  • Learn how institutions and the NCAA are responding to health and safety challenges that affect student athletes.
  • Benchmark what your institution is doing for student athletes against results from a national survey.
