Iowa’s public institutions undertook a comprehensive review of their operations to identify key strengths and challenges, strategic priorities, and opportunities to improve service delivery and reduce costs. Each institution, for example, evaluated finance operations, information technology, human resources, procurement, space utilization, energy efficiency, and time to graduation. At the University of Northern Iowa, this review led to significant efficiencies and savings. Improvements included the reorganized information technology function, procurement contracts and contract compliance, and the phased implementation of shared services.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop strategies to help improve efficiency in operations.
  • Manage significant change across campus.
  • Work with multiple philosophies and groups of consultants, using methods that enable all to succeed.
