Miles Lackey

Chief of Staff/Chief Financial Officer, Iowa State University

Miles Lackey serves as Chief of Staff and Chief Financial Officer of Iowa State University.

Chief Financial Officer - Serve as the senior officer responsible for overseeing financial planning/budgets, financial reporting/record-keeping, and treasury functions for the institution.

Chief of Staff - Serve as primary advisor to the President on all major institutional decisions and exercise decision making authority on institutional matters in his absence. Provide supervision of University Relations, Federal Relations, Internal Audit, and Ombuds Office.

In both capacities, Miles leads and serves on senior level/institution-wide committees.

Before coming to Iowa State, Miles served as director of federal government relations for the University of North Carolina System under President Erskine Bowles. During that time, Miles worked closely with the North Carolina Congressional Delegation to secure more than $50 million for basic and applied research initiatives based at each of the 16 constituent campuses that comprise the UNC System. In addition, Miles worked with the relevant congressional committees to ensure that adequate funding was provided for research and financial aid accounts that were critical to UNC and their students. Prior to his position at the UNC System, Miles served as Senator Elizabeth Dole’s legislative advisor on budget and appropriations issues. Miles also has considerable private sector experience, as he co-owns several restaurants in North Carolina and serves as chairman of the Board of Directors for Village Inn Pizza Parlors Inc. Miles holds a master’s degree in business administration from UNC-Chapel Hill, a master’s degree in public administration from George Mason University, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Lenoir-Rhyne University.
